Homage Year: Meet antoIne manning
The 23-year-old designer Antoine Manning is all about taking chances when it comes to design and creating. His brand is called “Homage Year,” which is an Atlanta-based brand that offered T-shirts, and streetwear but now is best known for the Ova handbags.
The inspiration behind the iconic Ova handbags is the design of the teardrop-shaped purse with the intention of avoiding harsh shapes and lines. Manning feels like we are in the Black Renaissance Era of fashion and he hopes that his brand will revolutionize fashion in a way that hasn’t been done before.
A quote that Manning lives by is, “I see people that move as if time [and patience] don’t exist, but I live by if we [were successful] once, we can do it again.”
As a designer, Manning understands that the art of fashion is that it is a trial-and-error process and that it is okay to keep exploring yourself and your work. In closing, his advice to someone who is discovering their own style is “enjoy it. “You have to look less at trends and look at the things that you’ve seen that you’d like to play with,” he says. “There’s no growth in comfort.”
Ova ShaPe Bags
The idea of the Ova shape came from the evolution of life and the concept of rebirth. Ova is the plural form of the ovum, a mature reproductive cell, which has the power to recreate, rebuild, and birth new life.
Honoring the beginning of life as well as the beauty within it has become the foundation for Manning’s work.
He’s since built upon the 2021 drop with a recent passion fruit activation, designing a yellow speckled bag that represents a symbolic way to look back at what he’s accomplished.
“The passion for this collection is a reflection of the fruits of our labor,” he explains. “There is this passion that we’ve, we’ve put into our craft.”
